Background:
October 1st 2006 marks the one year anniversary of the enactment of the civil union law in Connecticut. That law created a separate marital status for same-sex couples in Connecticut, giving them nearly all the rights, benefits, and responsibilities that are granted to a spouse under state law. Love Makes a Family is the largest gay rights organization in Connecticut (with over 16,000 supporters), working for the right to marry for same-sex couples.

Why This Topic?
As the Executive Producer of Ideas at Work and Beyond, I believe people should not be denied their inalienable rights based on their sexual orientation. Therefore, I invited the largest gay and lesbian organization in Connecticut on this program to further explore the issue of same-sex marriage in Connecticut.
