Retail sales are down nationwide, but despite the tough economy, there is one department where shopkeepers have seen a steady increase in business: The makeup counter.
"When you can't buy a $300 gown," says Pepper Johnson of the La Rose clothing and cosmetics boutique, "you can buy a $16 lipstick and feel just as wonderful."
It might be hard to believe, but cosmetic sales worldwide are booming even as sales plummet for other non-essentials and luxury items. Data on worldwide lipstick sales, via the rather frivolous Lipstick Index, are up 40 percent over the past several months relative to last year. It is a boost that has reached The Bahamas, with Johnson noting a steady stream of customers flocking to her store and aiming directly for its new line of custom-made cosmetics.
