The Marty Heiser Show

When you take special interest contributions, who are you more beholden to?

Tuesday, July 10, 2007

When you hold a public office, ones priority should be to represent the best interest of the people. If one was to accept campaign contributions from special interests or major corporations, wouldn't that present a conflict of interest. Very rarely, what is in the best interest of the people is the same for corporations. The major objective of corporations is to maximize profit often times at the expense of the people.

It is a rare and unique individual who is able to separate the two. It is also rare and unusual for a lobbyist or corporate interest to make a campaign contribution without expecting something in return. This is why this type of contributions should be looked at, if not questioned.

If a public official seeking office or re-election was limited to taking contributions from individuals, wouldn't one assume he or she is beholden to the best interest of the people. When individual people make campaign contributions, it is because they believe that candidate represents their best interest.

I feel that receiving contributions from special interests and/or corporations is not in the best interest of any city, as it implies conflict of interest.

I would like to hear what you have to say as I will be addressing this issue on my next TV show.
