Immediate Press Release from Helena Abrantes (D) Candidate for Danbury for Mayor

ABRANTES 2007
MAYOR
DEMOCRAT

NEWS RELEASE

August 30,2007
For Immediate Release

Danbury – Helena Abrantes, Democratic candidate for Mayor, issued the following statements regarding the recently proposed changes to the City’s Zoning Regulations for industrial uses. Abrantes was in attendance at the Zoning Commission meeting held Tuesday evening, August 28th.

“I am very disappointed in the changes being proposed to our City’s Industrial Zoning Districts. Municipal government needs to move forward and be innovative in attracting and retaining businesses and quality jobs to our community. These proposed changes would be significantly detrimental in achieving this objective and are seriously flawed,” Ms. Abrantes stated.

“During this administration, we have lost a critical mass of light industrial and industrial zoned land to multi-family residential development or for commercial purposes due to poor judgment in planning and zoning matters. This is especially the case with the former Carbide property on our City’s west side. Opportunities to attract corporate, research and development, and manufacturing businesses and their quality jobs have been lost as a result,” she said.

“Danbury is losing its competitive edge due to these and other restrictive, costly and bureaucratic actions. I will work with the business community by employing Smart Growth principles that facilitate proper growth with more quality jobs for our citizens,”
Abrantes went on to say. “Our property tax base, grand list growth and long term economic security is at stake here,” she said.

“Modern corporate parks require amenities and uses that attract employers and employees. Allowances for a gym, daycare, medical uses, business conference center and hotel are among the uses that should be retained within such zones and without the burden of additional steps, time and cost that ‘special exception cases cause.
The direction Danbury is presently headed is wrong and regressive. Danbury needs to move forward, think big and be innovative,” Abrantes concluded.
